What does Pyrite do?
Pyrite analyzes hedge fund strategies from their track records: what drives the returns, which style they actually follow, how they rank among peers, and how they change over time. You ask questions in plain English, Pyrite builds the charts/tables, you build your reports.
Is this investment advice?
No. Pyrite measures and describes. It does not recommend buying, selling, holding or avoiding any fund, and it is not your adviser, broker or placement agent.
Who is Pyrite for?
Allocators who select or monitor managers, and managers who want to see their strategy the way allocators will.
What is Research Preview?
A free account to try the platform: AI to query, charts and reports on a set of about 20 anonymized funds, with a free budget of ~100 queries. No credit card is needed.
I am not in the United States. Can I join?
You can use the Research Preview and the Manager account. Allocator and Institutional access is open to US investors only for now. We verify your location when you apply for an allocator account. More jurisdictions will follow.
How do I become an allocator?
Create a Research Preview account. Request a change of account type in Settings and complete the US Investor Certification. Each application is reviewed individually, and certifications are renewed every year, or sooner if your circumstances change.
Which account do I need?
It depends on what you do, aka your legal status. Account types carry legal requirements and rights, so paying more does not open more access.
Research Preview: entry account, to test the platform.
Manager: analyze and publish your own strategies.
Allocator (US Accredited Investor): analyze your own strategies, receive strategies from managers, and analyze the hedge fund universe. No publishing.
Institutional (US Qualified Purchaser): everything an allocator can do, plus publishing your own strategies.
Not allowed to publish strategies | Allowed to publish strategies | |
|---|---|---|
Not permitted access to hedge fund universe | Research Preview (Track A) | Fund Manager (Track B) |
Permitted access to the named hedge fund universe (Subject to data entitlements) | Allocator (Track C1) | Institutional (Track C2) |
Where does the data come from?
Strategies come from the managers themselves. Every other data is public:
Asset prices
Factors and styles, from specialist providers
Hedge fund retuns, from licensed databases
Economic data, from Fred or equivalent
Hedge funds appear by name to allocators once their account is approved IF they are subscribed to the data already. Pyrite does not resell fund data.
All metrics are calculated by Pyrite.
How many funds and metrics are there?
Pyrite currently distributes about 480 billion precalculated metrics (from our own universe of 5+ Tn).
We plan to add more assets, more styles (public and proprietary), more factors, more techniques, and to increase our fund universe at the same time.
Why are funds anonymized in Research Preview?
Our data licences reserve fund names to certified investors who have purchased the access. Research Preview and Manager users see about 20 anonymized funds, and the AI will not reveal a name, manager or identifying detail to anyone not entitled to it. Pyrite does not resell hedge fund data.
How much history does a fund need?
At least 18 months. Below that, most statistics are too noisy to be meaningful, and Pyrite does not compute them.
Can I download the data?
No. Our data providers and managers do not permit bulk download of their returns. Results are shown in tables and charts, where you are entitled to see them, and can then be saved into your reports.
Is the data free of errors?
No dataset is. Fund data is shown as received from our sources, who do not permit amendments.
Instead of changing it, we run rule-based statistical checks that flag possible errors. When a metric, table or chart you request uses data our checks have flagged, we tell you.
The checks will not catch every error, and may flag data that is correct: the absence of a flag does not mean the data is accurate. We do not guarantee the accuracy of any data.
What if I find an error in the data?
Tell us at Support@PyriteRE.com, with the fund and the period. We review every report.
Which AI models I can use?
The leading models from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, xAI, DeepSeek and Moonshot. Pyrite sets one by default, based on speed, accuracy, and reliability; you can change your default in Settings, or switch for a single question. Models evolve fast; the model list, our comparative tests and our default may change at any time.
Does the AI make up numbers?
It answers from Pyrite's data. The Pyrite engine precomputes most numbers, for speed; the AI reports them, and says which metric, period and group of funds it used. If the data cannot answer the question, it says so. Like any AI, it can misread a question: if an answer looks wrong, rephrase it or narrow the frame. We plan to add calculations that run on demand. For now, they are limited to PCA regressions, calculated by the Pyrite engine, and simple arithmetic done by the AI.
Why do some answers take longer?
Clear questions get the fastest answers. When a question is ambiguous, the AI tries several readings, which takes longer. Naming the fund, the metric and the period helps. So does naming the chart you want. We review questions the AI could not answer, as described below, and teach AI how to understand them better.
Does Pyrite read my questions?
Questions from Research Preview users and beta testers may be reviewed by Pyrite staff, to improve how the AI understands questions. For other users, we look at a question only when investigating a glitch. For all users, we monitor model choices, speed, and costs in aggregate, not individually.
Your questions are processed by the AI provider you select, under its own terms.
How are AI questions charged?
Each question is charged individually, from your AI balance. Different models use different amounts of input and output tokens at different prices, so the same question can cost more or less on another model. You add balance in dollars, by card, whenever you need it.
What can I upload?
Your own strategy's returns, from a tear sheet or a spreadsheet. A strategy can be a fund, a managed account or one sleeve of a larger book. You can upload your strategy to analyze it, without ever publishing it.
Who can see a strategy I upload?
Only you, until you choose to publish it. Pyrite staff accesses it only when they need to, and it never appears by name in anyone else's results. Once published, like every fund, it contributes to anonymized peer statistics, which always combine at least 20 funds before a result is shown.
Is my strategy used to train AI?
Not to identify or copy it. We do not reverse-engineer or replicate your strategy, and we block queries that would identify it. The Data Upload & Confidentiality Agreement allows Pyrite to use strategy data, anonymized and aggregated, to improve its AI models. Once you publish, your strategy also enters the cross-sectional data used to benchmark all strategies.
What happens to my data if I close my account?
Pyrite deletes or returns your private strategy data within 30 days, unless the law requires us to keep it. Anonymized statistics already built into peer benchmarks or the AI cannot be separated out and remain. Published data follows the publication rules.
How do I share a strategy with an allocator?
From My Strategies: complete your manager and strategy questionnaires, sign the Strategy Publication Declaration, then invite named recipients by email or publish to all allocators.
What can a recipient do with my strategy?
Analyze it with the same tools used for every other fund: ask the AI, chart it, compare it, build reports on it. A recipient cannot download your returns or pass your strategy to a third party. Only you can share it.
Can I stop sharing?
Yes, at any time, recipient-by-recipient or for everyone. Published data may stay in Pyrite's and allocator's records after withdrawal, as the Declaration explains.
A manager sent me a strategy. Do I need to pay?
Not to receive it. You can receive and analyze a first strategy with a free Research Preview account. To receive more, you need an allocator account, which has its own subscription; the strategies you receive will stay free. Managers pay to publish their strategies to you.
Is a published strategy an offer to invest?
No. It is information. Any offer is made only by the manager, through its own offering documents. Pyrite does not verify the data that managers submit, and receives nothing if you invest.
How do I pay?
By card, through Stripe. Pyrite never sees your card number, only its brand and last four digits.
How do I cancel?
In Settings, under Subscriptions and invoices.
How do I reach you?
Support@PyriteRE.com for anything about the platform. Privacy@PyriteRE.com for personal data requests.
